Symptoms to Watch Out For

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars, typically appearing in the late teens to mid-twenties, though some people experience earlier, later, or no eruption at all. While wisdom teeth sometimes emerge without immediate issues, there are several reasons they may need to be removed.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
  • Crooked Growth or Impaction: Wisdom teeth may grow at an angle, becoming stuck against neighbouring teeth and causing alignment issues.
  • Insufficient Space: Limited room in the jaw can lead to crowding, resulting in pain and potential complications.
  • Trapped Food or Cleaning Challenges: Poor positioning can make wisdom teeth difficult to clean, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.
  • Impacted Teeth: Teeth that fail to fully erupt can become infected more easily, leading to pain, swelling, and other complications.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, swelling, or any issues related to your wisdom teeth, a consultation with your dentist can determine the best course of action to protect your oral health.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

Wisdom tooth extraction may be a straightforward procedure performed by your dentist or require a surgical approach by an oral surgeon. After an initial examination, your dentist will determine the type of extraction needed. You may have all four wisdom teeth removed at once or gradually over multiple appointments.

Examining Your Teeth

Before scheduling your extraction, we thoroughly assess your teeth and jaw. X-rays will be taken to evaluate how your wisdom teeth are developing and to examine the root structure. This helps us decide whether the teeth need removal and whether a simple extraction or surgery is necessary. Our goal is to eliminate surprises and ensure a smooth process.

The Removal Process

During your initial exam, we’ll discuss what to expect and provide preparation tips. Based on your preferences and your doctor’s recommendation, we’ll use local freezing, sedation, or anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Using minimally invasive techniques, we remove teeth as gently as possible to promote a quick recovery.

Aftercare

We recommend bringing a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you while you recover. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions, including tips on what to do—and avoid—for a smooth recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, we’re always here to help.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed. Extraction is necessary only if they become impacted, cause pain, or interfere with the alignment of your jaw and teeth.

Modern dentistry prioritizes your comfort. We use advanced tools and techniques to minimize discomfort and work efficiently to reduce trauma, promoting faster healing. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to ensure a smooth recovery.

You can eat about an hour after the procedure, once the gauze sponges are removed. Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours and avoid hot foods or drinks, as well as drinking through straws, to reduce complications.

We’ll provide specific aftercare instructions at your appointment, but here are general tips for recovery:

  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, using straws, smoking, or blowing your nose for 24 hours.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your tongue or fingers.
  • Steer clear of hot foods and drinks.
  • Refrain from taking aspirin, as it can inhibit blood clotting.
  • Limit physical activity and rest as much as possible.

Plan for three to four days of rest or light activity to minimize complications and promote healing. Full recovery typically takes about two weeks, but discomfort during this period is usually minimal. Your comfort and healing are our priorities, and we’re here to guide you through every step of the process.

Dr. Saxena is hands down the best dentist I have ever had. His knowledge and the technologies he is using, make going to the dentist a breeze. A crown is done in house within one day! And they fit like a glove. The rest of the team is super friendly too, so 100 out of 100 points.

Moved here from Toronto several years ago and I must say the dental equipments are at par, if not better. Level of service is phenomenal. Shout out to Hygienist Holly, who is amazing at what she does. Has soft and gentle touch when working on your teeth, with matching good singing voice to make you forget you’re sitting on a dental chair. Good Job!
